European Union’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) increases companies’ responsibilities in processing personal data. The regulation comes into force in May 2018 and applies also to companies outside the EU, if they have marketing activities targeted to EU citizens.
The EU’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) renews the legislation related to storing and processing personal data, marketing and communications. The new regulation also gives the data subject a right to request what personal data is being processes and held. The company should be able to provide the data electronically in a commonly used format and easily understandable form without expenses.
The new regulation not only applies to companies located within the EU, it also applies to companies located outside of the EU, if they offer goods or services to, or monitor the behavior of EU citizens. The same applies to technology partners and software providers who should also adjust the GDPR requirements accordingly and store all personal data within the EU irrespective of whether they operate from within or outside the EU.
The GDPR comes into force on the 25th of May in 2018.
Now that people, for the first time, have the possibility to request personal data easily and cost free, it is expected, that they will use this right more frequently. Liana Technologies, the leading company in digital marketing and communications software, recommends to start preparations well in advance to avoid surprises when the first data request arrives.
“The company should start with mapping out, what personal data is held and where. Once the current situation has been untangled, you can do step-by-step improvements to ensure the personal data is stored and processed appropriately, and delve into how and by whom data requests are dealt with,” advices Mr. Juha-Mikko Ahonen, the CTO and Chief Security Officer at Liana Technologies.
At Liana Technologies, preparing for the GDPR has been a strong focus for a long time, and the company keeps a close eye on any news or information related to the new regulation. At the moment, the company is updating its software to ensure they meet the requirements of the new regulation well before it comes into force.
“We are developing our systems to support inquiries related to personal data and the right to become forgotten, so that our customers can effortlessly hand in, transfer and remove personal data.” Ahonen says.
