Over 150 employees from Dubai based Canadian Specialist Hospital, have taken the Dubai Fitness Challenge a notch higher by monitoring the number of steps taken by the employees during the working hours. The Pacer App monitors the number of steps taken by each member in the group. The participants are recording the number of steps taken, distance travelled, duration of activity and calories burned to stay ahead in the challenge.
The hospital has also decided to recognize the winners by presenting awards across several categories at the end of the challenge. Furthermore, a winner is also picked daily for the most number of steps taken.
Dr. Yashar Ali, CEO, Canadian Specialist Hospital stated, “Dubai Fitness Challenge is truly a revolutionary concept and a progressive initiative by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, that has enlightened the residents about the importance of fitness and health. The fitness challenge serves as a motivational platform for everyone who has surrendered to their grueling schedules and are unable to dedicate time towards their health. We, at Canadian Specialist Hospital wholly support the campaign by encouraging our staff to be on the move as much as possible during the working hours”.
The Pacer application allows members to join a closed group where all the staff can connect with each other and receive real-time updates on their peer’s performance. “The competition has had a great impact on the performance of the staff. The figures were tripled from 10,000 steps per day to 30,000 steps per day in first week itself. We are glad our team is showing enthusiasm in the competition and reaping benefits from the same,” concluded Dr. Yashar Ali.
Dr. Sarla Kumari, Specialist Physician Diabetologist, stated, “Due to the sedentary lifestyle in the emirate, most people find it difficult to incorporate exercise in their daily routine which contributes to the increasing rates of obesity, cholesterol and diabetes cases in the UAE. The idea behind this activity is to engage the staff in simple physical activity which will provide them a respite from prolonged hours of sitting that may lead to other complications”.
According to a recent research, exercise substantially improves thinking skills, attention, memory and cognitive skills at work. During the study, the volunteers engaged in gentle exercises that involved standing, walking, pedaling for minimum 10 minutes in one hour which resulted in a more productive outcome. “Exercise plays a major role in stimulating one’s mind which in turn leads to better performance”, concluded Dr. Sarla.
Since the initiation of the Dubai Fitness Challenge in mid-October, several establishments are participating in the month-long campaign by encouraging their staff to engage in physical activities which is an exceptional way to foster healthy lifestyles.
